Fulfilled by Amazon vs Fulfilled by Merchant: Making the Call

fba vs fbm

Every product a brand lists on Amazon ships one of two ways: Amazon stores it and sends it out, or the seller does. In Seller Central the choice looks like a simple setting, yet it shapes what each sale costs, how quickly it arrives, and how much of the experience still feels like your brand.

Comparing fulfilled by Amazon vs fulfilled by merchant is not about crowning a winner; it is about matching each product to the model that suits it right now. Here is how to make that call.

TL;DR

  • FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon): Amazon stores your stock and ships your orders, handles customer service and returns, and your listings can show the Prime badge.
  • FBM (Fulfillment by Merchant): you, or a 3PL, store stock and ship every order, with full control over packaging, carriers, and stock.
  • FBA asks for stock in advance, and storage costs more the longer it sits.
  • FBM puts postage and warehouse costs directly on you.
  • Most brands decide product by product, and many run both.

What Is FBM And FBA? The Two Ways An Amazon Order Ships

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) means you send inventory into Amazon’s fulfillment network. When an order comes in, Amazon picks, packs, and ships it, answers the customer’s questions, and handles any return. Because Amazon controls the delivery, FBA listings are eligible for the Prime badge.

Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM) keeps Amazon as the storefront only. The stock stays on your own shelves or in a 3PL warehouse, and every order is shipped by you or your 3PL within the delivery promise shown on the listing. A merchant fulfilled Amazon offer can carry Prime too, but only through Seller Fulfilled Prime, a separate program with its own trial period and delivery standards.

Amazon FBA vs FBM: What Each Model Still Leaves On Your Desk

FBA is often described as hands-off, but only the outbound side really is. Since Amazon ended its own prep service in the US at the start of 2026, every unit has to arrive labeled, bagged, and packed to Amazon’s rules. Making that happen is the seller’s job. So is planning each inbound shipment around the storage space Amazon allows you. FBM, for its part, puts the whole chain on your side, from storage to customer messages and returns.

A 3PL can take on either job. Merchdrop handles Amazon FBA prep in its Chatsworth, California, warehouse, from FNSKU labels and polybagging to high-speed shrink wrap and pallet builds, while FBM orders are shipped from the same floor.

Stock Sent To Amazon Is Stock Committed To Amazon

The difference that gets the least attention is timing. With FBA, you decide weeks ahead how many units Amazon gets, and once inside, that stock mainly serves Amazon shoppers. Sending it to other channels through Multi-Channel Fulfillment, or bringing it back through a removal order, costs a fee.

The commitment also has a running cost. Amazon bills storage monthly by volume, charges a higher rate from October through December, and adds surcharges once units have sat for months. A fast-moving product barely notices. A slow, seasonal, or date-sensitive product can give up a good part of its margin while it waits, and beauty or wellness goods also need enough shelf life left to pass Amazon’s checks. With FBM, stock stays put until an order comes in, without Amazon’s storage meter running.

Amazon FBA vs Self Fulfillment: What Running FBM Really Takes

Self fulfillment drops Amazon’s fulfillment fees from the bill, but space, people, packaging, and postage take their place, and in 2026 several of those have been climbing.

Postage lands on the seller directly. In its March 2026 filing with the Postal Regulatory Commission, USPS set a temporary average increase of 8.0% on Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, and Parcel Select, running from April 26, 2026, to January 17, 2027, right through the holiday season. Space is getting harder to come by as well: the October 2026 Logistics Managers’ Index, run by supply chain researchers at several US universities, shows warehouse prices rising at their fastest rate since May 2022, with smaller firms reporting tighter storage capacity than larger ones.

Once orders outgrow a spare room, handing merchant-fulfilled orders to a 3PL keeps the FBM advantages without the packing table. Merchdrop’s pick and pack for FBM orders works to each order’s ship-by date, with your packaging going in the box exactly as you designed it.

Making The Call, Product By Product

Amazon lets you choose FBA or FBM per listing, so the decision never has to cover your whole catalog. Four traits settle most cases.

Fast Sellers In Small, Simple Packaging Suit FBA

A compact product that sells every day spends little time in storage and gains the most from the Prime badge. FBA fees rise with size and weight, so small items also pay the least for Amazon’s speed.

Bulky, Seasonal, Or Short-Dated Products Suit FBM

Large items carry higher FBA fees, seasonal stock pays storage through the quiet months, and date-sensitive goods risk shelf-life checks. Holding them yourself, or with a 3PL that tracks lots and expiry dates, avoids paying Amazon for the wait.

Products That Sell On The Unboxing Suit FBM

FBA orders arrive in Amazon’s shipping box. If a branded mailer, a card, or the way the order is presented is part of what brings customers back, FBM keeps that in your hands.

Restricted Products May Make The Call For You

Some items, including many products classed as hazmat, face extra review or are not accepted into FBA at all, which leaves FBM as the way to reach Amazon shoppers. Merchdrop supports hazmat and restricted product handling for sellers in that position.

Decide Before Your Next Shipment Lands

Every inbound shipment brings the same question back: how many units go to Amazon, and how many stay behind for FBM orders? That split is easier to get right at the planning stage, product by product, than at the receiving dock with cartons already waiting. Work through the four traits above for each product, and the shipment arrives with a plan.

Merchdrop handles both sides of that split. On the FBA side, the team creates the shipment plan, coordinates the carrier, and inspects and repackages stranded or returned units. FBM orders ship straight from Merchdrop’s own facility, in time to meet Amazon’s delivery standards, and the same operation covers fulfillment for your other sales channels.

FAQ

What does FBM stand for on Amazon?

FBM stands for Fulfillment by Merchant. The seller, or a 3PL working for the seller, stores the stock and ships each Amazon order, while Amazon provides the storefront and checkout.

Merchant fulfilled vs fulfilled by Amazon: which one is cheaper?

FBM removes Amazon’s fulfillment and storage fees but adds your own costs for space, staff, packaging, and postage. Bulky, slow, or seasonal products usually cost less through FBM, while small, fast-moving items tend to cost less through FBA.

Can I use FBA and FBM at the same time?

Yes. One product can carry both an FBA and an FBM offer, so it stays available when an inbound shipment is late or FBA stock runs low.

Can FBM listings get the Prime badge?

Only through Seller Fulfilled Prime, which requires a Professional selling account, a trial period, and meeting ongoing delivery standards. Standard FBM listings do not show the badge.
